 Water voles are endangered primarily due to a combination of habitat loss and the predatory threat posed by the invasive American mink. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to land use changes and river engineering have reduced the areas where they can thrive, and the American mink, which was introduced to the UK from fur farms, preys on water voles, lacking a natural predator in the UK.
